Australia's tax system is governed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and encompasses various taxes such as income tax, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Capital Gains Tax (CGT), and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). To establish a career in taxation in Australia, obtaining a recognised qualification is essential. The Tax Institute Higher Education offers comprehensive programs:
The Tax Agent Program is designed to help candidates meet the requirements set by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) for registration as a tax agent. Completing this program enables you to provide tax agent services such as preparing tax returns, offering tax advice, and managing compliance.
The program is ideal for individuals who have already completed a degree, diploma, or higher qualification in accounting or commerce and require additional approved courses to fulfil the TPB’s academic requirements. Please ensure you contact the TPB to determine what their requirements are for you.
The full program covers specific subjects in Australian Taxation Law and Commercial Law, both of which are mandatory for registration. It comprises six core subjects:
The program can be completed in one year (full-time) or two years (part-time), depending on your schedule. Upon completion, you will have met the education requirements to apply for tax agent registration with the TPB. It is important to note that the other requirements are that you meet the TPB 'fit and proper' requirements and have appropriate professional indemnity insurance cover to protect consumers. We suggest you view the TPB website: Registering as an individual tax agent.
Dual qualification opportunity: If you meet the entry requirements, enrolling in the Tax Agent Program may also allow you to complete the Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law using the same subjects, thereby achieving a postgraduate qualification without additional study.
Successful completion of the Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) Program then meeting The Tax Institute CTA membership requirements, enables you to use the prestigious CTA designation, signifying your expertise in taxation. Achieving this credential demonstrates a high level of technical knowledge and ethical standards, enhancing career prospects and professional credibility.
The program comprises four subjects:
Subjects are delivered online and designed to develop technical knowledge, professional judgement and real-world advisory skills.
Dual qualification opportunity: Provided you meet the entry requirements, you may also enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Applied Tax Advisory. You can complete both the CTA designation and the graduate certificate using the same four subjects.
